LETTERS TO THE WORLD: 04

I was watching The Blind Side two weeks ago and I got inspired by Michael Oher when he wrote an essay for his English paper. So, for the fourth volume of Letters to the World, I'd like to share with you his essay which was presented in the movie The Blind Side.

Courage and Honor

"Courage is a hard thing to figure. You can have courage based on a dumb idea or a mistake, but you're not supposed to question adults, or your coach, or your teacher because they make the rules. Maybe they know best but maybe they don't. It all depends on who you are, where you come from. Didn't at least one of the six hundred guys think about giving up and joining with the other side? I mean, Valley of Death, that's pretty salty stuff. That's why courage is tricky. Should you always do what others tell you to do? Sometimes you might not even know why you're doing something. I mean, any fool can have courage. But honor, that's the real reason you either do something or you don't. It's who you want to be. If you die trying for something important then you have both honor and courage and that's pretty good. I think that's what the writer was saying; that you should try for courage and hope for honor. And maybe even pray that the people telling you what to do have some, too."

LETTERS TO THE WORLD: 03

"My mother used to
tell me to be careful
when I was walking
through a dark alley
because there could be
boys in hoodies who
could take me
but my mother
should've warned
me when I introduced
him to her because
this boy had a
dark alley within
his heart and he
stole my innocence
and ran away with
my heart in his hand
and now my thoughts
are razorblades
that make me
bleed every day."

"Why should I be sad? I have lost someone who didn't love me. But they lost someone who loved them."

"I am my own ghost haunting the memories I love the most."

LETTERS TO THE WORLD: 02

A Poem To The One Who Will Always Wear My Heart On His Sleeve
Written by Anna Bartling

We were never here.
Lets act as if we,
never attempted to be –
and while that might,
be the truth for you,
it wouldn’t be to me.

If I could change it all,
could set your demons free,
and make you let go,
I would without flinching –
just so you could be with me.

But I can’t make you lose your heart.
You’ll always be the one,
I wish I had met when,
timing was good for falling in love.

Just know,
you meant something to me,
you still do,
and sometimes I still get drunk,
on so sweet memories –
let’s not let them ever get bitter,
it would be such a shame.

Things worth living for:
- falling in love
- seeing friends you haven't seen in a long time
- giant mugs of coffee
- warm hugs on bad days

"You don’t need another human being to make your life complete
but let’s be honest: having your wounds kissed by someone
who doesn’t see them as disasters in your soul,
but cracks to put their love into,
is the most calming thing in this world."

LETTERS TO THE WORLD: 01

This Is What It's Like To Be Loved By A Writer

If you think she hasn't written about you,
you're highly mistaken.
If you're any importance at all,
she's scribbled your name down within her pages.

She will describe the way you think.

She'll capture the way her mind comes alive,
how it spins and breathes when she is speaking to you.
She'll recount the conversations you have
and how they showed her new things
she didn't even know she was looking for.

She'll detail your eyes.

The way they dance when you're excited,
or the way they flutter when you're fighting
sleep.
How the color captivates her and she won't look away
no matter how much she wants to.

She'll describe your hands

and the way they intertwined with hers,
or the way they feel when you pull her close,
and she feels protected.

The way you make laughter rise up her throat

until it bursts out of her.
The way you listened to her,
and made her feel maybe she wasn't
quite so insane for her thoughts after all.

If you believe at any point

that she hasn't immortalized you
with ink on paper, you don't know her.
She will remember you.
She will make sure
the world remembers you too.
